Make the Movie Widget work on Tiger

Posted on 17 June 2008 in Dashboard, Mac OS X, Macintosh Tips & Help | Comments

Tiger users were able to use and download the widget from MacAmour.
But it seems it stopped working.
So here’s the how to fix it, then you’ll never get the “invalid zip code” error message again.
Recently the Leopard Movies widget, which Steve demoed along with Leopard, stopped working in Tiger. Leopard’s built-in Movies widget continues to function, while in Tiger, it gives an error of “invalid zip code.” You can make this widget function once again in 10.4.

Navigate to /Library/Widgets and find the Movies widget. Control-click on the widget and choose Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. Then open parser.js in your favorite text editor, and replace all occurrences of A99D3D1A-774C-4914-9E3B-18645117428A with DE7E251E-7758-40A4-98E0-87557E9F31F0 and save. Close any open movie widget in Dashboard, then re-open it. Now it works.

Google App Engine vs. Adobe Air

Posted on 18 May 2008 in 3rd Party Software, Freeware | Comments

This is the NEXT internet revolution!
Probably inspired by Konfabulator (Yahoo Widgets), Apple’s Dashboard and the iPhone web applications, this new technologies are impressive! Based on some runtime environments, Adobe Air and Google App Engine are like some “OS” inside your operating system, based on native web applications.

I personally have only tried Adobe Air, and I’m very impressed by the results, especially with AOL Videos (as you can see it in the screenshot):

As you can see, the application is beautiful, and runs flawlessly!

The applications are so easy to install (Adobe Air), here’s for example the eBay Adobe Air application’s page:

Better: once installed, the application goes in your Applications folder just like a regular one, and man.. how fast they launch!!!

Another screenshot of eBay Desktop:

More? The site of AOL Music – Top 100 Videos is about 900 kb (less than a Dashboard Widget)!

“To Do”: The Widget Apple Forgot

Posted on 7 January 2008 in Address Book, iSync & iCal, Apple Mail, Dashboard | Comments

ToDo Widget

To Do is THE widget Apple forgot in the bundled widgets you have on your dashboard with Leopard. To me, stickies are dead, and they have been replaced by To Do and Notes in the latest Apple OS: Leopard.

This widget is simple, it has sleek design and it is 100% integrated to iCal & Mail. No need to open these apps to see your To Dos, the widget collects them all and it even gives you the ability to add/remove a To Do, or to mark them as done!

Download it free here.

Mac Amour News

Posted on 7 January 2008 in Dashboard, News | Comments

A lot of new things in Mac Amour these days:

  1. Jesus Franco joined us, he is the author of many great posts
  2. Mac Amour’s Community Website is still growing and it has today 43 members from different countries: USA, France, Tunisia, Colombia etc…
  3. Mac Amour now has a dashboard widget designed by Jesus Franco, it is available for download here
  4. Mac Amour’s rank on Alexa increased by 68% in 3 months, which is impressive!
  5. Mac Amour’s Webmail is ready, it’s ad free, super fast, but for the moment we only offered a few @macamour.com addresses to some of our VIP members
  6. I also had the honor to have my Tunisian holidays iCal calendar featured on Apple Downloads site, which is a special (little) thing to me

I would like to thank all of our readers, application developers and of course the Mac Amour team which are making of Mac Amour something “unique” (blog + community + small mail service combo)!

How to Refresh your Widgets!

Posted on 23 September 2007 in Apple Software, Dashboard, Macintosh Tips & Help | Comments

DASHBOARD

How many times have you had widgets what were stuck, or were just too slow to update the information?

Well there’s a little trick you can do that will simply refresh a widget if you need it to show you the updated weather, movie listing etc.

When you press F12 (Or on new Aluminum Keyboards F4) you’ll get to the Dashboard menu with all your nifty little widgets, (all sucking the life out of your RAM).

Once you are there, and you need to refresh one, all you need to do is press it once, and hit Command (apple logo) R and it will make a swirl effect and it is then updated with the latest info.

Yes it’s THAT easy.
