The Redsn0w software by DevTeam has always allowed you to jailbreak your iOS device, giving you complete control over your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch (see why you should jailbreak here). This morning, though, redsn0w version 0.9.8b1 was released with iOS 5 Beta 1 support, meaning you can now jailbreak devices and run Cydia apps on devices with iOS 5 installed. Here’s how to jailbreak iOS 5!
Warning: This is a tethered jailbreak, meaning that every time you reboot the device, you’ll need to use redsn0w again or else lose all your jailbreak data. Also, redsn0w will not carrier unlock your device, and if your device isn’t registered to run iOS 5, this guide won’t work for you. This should work on any device capable of running iOS 5 Beta 1 short of the iPad 2, which still hasn’t been jailbroken, but we’ve only tested it on the iPhone 4. Be careful!
Ingredients:
- A compatible iOS device with its UDID registered with Apple’s iOS Developer Program
- That same device updated to firmware iOS 5 beta 1
- A copy of the .ipsw file of the iOS 5 Beta 1 Firmware for your Device (can be downloaded from Apple’s Developer Site)
- iTunes 10.5 Beta
- redsn0w 0.9.8b1 for Mac.

Wanted to Sync my “unsupported” Nokia 8600 Luna phone with iSync without installing any third party phone plugin, and, I’ve realized it was possible.
All I did was to follow these 7 easy steps that will take less than a minute to be performed:
- Go to /Applications, then iSync.app control + click then browse Contents > PlugIns > ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice > Contents > PlugIns > PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin > Contents > Resources
- (Make a copy on your desktop of) open the MetaClasses.plist using text edit
- Search for series40 and find a phone with the same edition as yours. Mine was 8600, and is very similar to 8800.
- Copy the phone’s entry (everything from com.nokia.8800 to the end tag) and paste it just before the next phone’s tag:

- Change all model entries to your phone’s model number. In my case, that was all 8800 to 8600.
- Be sure to copy the phone’s tiff file also: NOK8800.tiff to NOK8600.tiff.
You can change this image later if you want to.
- Delete any previous pairing and re-do with your phone and add it to iSync!
Give it a try, you’ll be surprised to see the results!

Download two 8600 phone’s tiff I’ve created here.
Download an untouched MetaClasses.plist here.

What you’ll need:
A Mac of course
an Intel Mac indeed;
The OS build you’re going to install onto your handheld;
X11 must be installed on your Mac;
WineBottler.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you brick your phone, as with all leaked/official but not your carrier OS versions, continue at your own risk
The tutorial starts just after the jump.

Get it from your software update menu.
This is a new trend it seems, most of the everyday application Mac lovers use have been updated to be Snow Leopard compatible through beta versions; as a result you won’t be notified of these released through your applications’ update menus.

For instance, Xtorrent has been released to a 2.0 beta v80, and CoverSutra to a 2.2 beta 5.
Even Appfresh won’t notify you of these updates. Solution? Visit developers’ blogs/sites.
- Not all third party softwares will be supported: Many rumors said Adobe CS3 won’t be supported, but it seems according to many beta tester it does work as well as many other applications.
- Invisible changes: do not expect for graphical improvement, this update is a performing boost taking all advantages of 64 bits. That means all apps included with Snow Leopard have been rewritten for 64-bit processors. Apps coded by third-party developers who opt to rewrite their software with 64-bit support will also be snappier.
- End of PPC: As you can see in this post, the PPC platform won’t be supported in this release.

Updated to OS 10.5.8 through the combo update? You may get a lot of permissions repaired every time you run disk utility. Some of them are “scaring” I must admit…
That’s the reason why I made some investigations to find a solution on how to fix them.
And the solution is easy but annoying: install the combo update twice in a row with no permission repairs in between.
Worked great on my Macs.
