Sync iCloud enabled iCal and address book to BlackBerry handhelds

Posted on November 6th, 2011 in BlackBerry, dotmac & MobileMe | No Comments »

All of you have noticed it is not possible to sync your BlackBerry handhelds with your Mac after upgrading to iCloud anymore.
First thing you may need to consider, Apple will not provide with a solution to this problem, why? Because they actually prefer you to buy an iPhone,
Second thing to know, BlackBerry will not provide with a solution (unless they release a new version of their BlackBerry Desktop Software) because this problem is caused by a third party application.

Well, here is a workaround provided by MacAmour in order to sync your devices anyway.
Just follow these four steps:

  1. Open your System Preferences panel and go to iCloud:
  2. Disable Address Book and iCal sync by unselecting them
  3. Start BlackBerry Desktop Software and you’ll notice it is possible to sync your BlackBerry with address book and iCal again
  4. Don’t forget to re-enable the services your disabled in step 2.

Evidence 1- The Deals with the four majors
Apple’s plans to bring music streaming to the upcoming iCloud service are coming together swiftly this week as the company signs up a third major record label.
Apple does indeed appear to be planning big changes to its cloud services package, according to references found in the latest developer preview of Mac OS X Lion.
According to Bloomberg, Apple reached an agreement with Warner, EMI and Sony.
Universal Music Group – the largest of the four major labels – is the only one yet to strike a deal with Apple.

Evidence 2 – Amazon stops selling MobileMe
Worst, Amazon.com has just stopped all sales of MobileMe. It’s almost as if they know something’s coming that could blast their recently unveiled Cloud Locker music streaming service out of the water. There’s an iCloud on the horizon.

Evidence 3 – iCloud found in OS X Lion under the “Castle” codename
French blog Consomac discovered code referring to something called “Castle,” which is described as an upgrade to MobileMe in Lion programming strings.

Evidence 4 – Apple spent $4.5 million on iCloud.com
Apple has reportedly purchased the iCloud.com domain for the new cloud-based storage service it is currently working on, paying $4.5 million to the previous owners who have now rebranded their service. Visitors to iCloud.com are currently redirected to the new service – now called CloudMe – but it is believed Apple will take over the domain when it’s ready.

Evidence 5 – New job listing for hiring a media guru
new job listing on Apple’s website reveals the company is in search of a media engine guru who may help the company kickstart its cloud-based media streaming service dubbed iCloud.

7 easy steps to make any Nokia Series 40 sync with iSync

Posted on April 23rd, 2011 in Mobile Phones | 1 Comment »

Wanted to Sync my “unsupported” Nokia 8600 Luna phone with iSync without installing any third party phone plugin, and, I’ve realized it was possible.

All I did was to follow these 7 easy steps that will take less than a minute to be performed:

  1. Go to /Applications, then iSync.app control + click then browse Contents > PlugIns > ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice > Contents > PlugIns > PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin > Contents > Resources
  2. (Make a copy on your desktop of) open the MetaClasses.plist using text edit
  3. Search for series40 and find a phone with the same edition as yours. Mine was 8600, and is very similar to 8800.
  4. Copy the phone’s entry (everything from com.nokia.8800 to the end tag) and paste it just before the next phone’s tag:
  5. Change all model entries to your phone’s model number. In my case, that was all 8800 to 8600.
  6. Be sure to copy the phone’s tiff file also: NOK8800.tiff to NOK8600.tiff.
You can change this image later if you want to.
  7. Delete any previous pairing and re-do with your phone and add it to iSync!

Give it a try, you’ll be surprised to see the results!

Download two 8600 phone’s tiff I’ve created here.
Download an untouched MetaClasses.plist here.

Sync Samsung address book with Mac without 3rd party Software

Posted on March 29th, 2011 in Macintosh Tips & Help, Mobile Phones | No Comments »

My dear mother keeps on buying Samsung branded mobile phones, and I’m the one in charge of backing up/restoring her contacts… And man… It’s a tricky task.
First thing to know, Samsung phones are missing one key feature: they don’t work with iSync.
In fact, Samsung failed to implement SyncML in most (or all) of its mobile phones.

So, here is a manual way to sync your contacts with your Samsung mobile phones based on my experience in saving/restoring mom’s contacts.

Three little things before we start:

  • Your phone is supposed to be (bluetooth) paired with your Mac (System Preferences/Bluetooth/Devices/Set Up New Device/Pair your phone with your Mac),
  • The bluetooth status is set to show on your menu bar (System Preferences/Bluetooth/Settings: Show Bluetooth status in the menu bar):
  • Your Samsung phone is supposed to be “discoverable”.

Just follow this tutorial, here we go:

  1. Open OS X’s Address Book;
  2. Change the vCard format (preferences/vCard/Set vCard Format to 2.1);
  3. Now select all of your contacts, and drag them anywhere you want by holding down the option key (it should create a single vCard for each and every contact);
  4. Send the cards over: Menu Bar/Bluetooth Status/Send File; select all the vCards generated in step 3 and select your paired Samsung phone;
  5. The worst part of the tutorial: accept each vCard, one at a time… Or, if your phones allows you to, set it to automatically accept incoming files from your Mac.

If you’re in the same situation… Buy your mother a BlackBerry or an iPhone, if she still refuses… print and keep this tutorial…

iDisk Failed to Sync

Posted on December 21st, 2008 in Macintosh Tips & Help | No Comments »

An error message that I don’t wish none of you to meet, but it’s happening to me these days on two Mac’s.
This post comes after the one I announced in the OS X update, not sure it’s OS 10.5.6 but I have some doubts on that.
Solution 1 is the following:

  1. Turn off iDisk Sync (click the Stop button in the iDisk pane of MobileMe preferences, in System Preferences).
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. From the Go menu, choose Home.
  4. Open the Library folder.
    • For Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier: Remove the Mirrors folder
    • For Mac OS X 10.5: Remove the FileSync folder
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. Re-enable iDisk Sync.

Solution 2:

Someone calling themselves dotwaffle on the mac discussion boards gave the following solution:

… disconnect the iDisk, turn off Syncing, open a Finder with the iDisk mounted online, then opened iTerm (Terminal will do)

I navigated to my iDisk (in my case cd /Volumes/dotwaffle) and ran the following command:

sudo rm -rf .FileSync/ .TemporaryItems/ ._.TemporaryItems .com.apple.timemachine.supported

8 Steps to make your iPhone sync your data Over the Air

Posted on July 23rd, 2008 in dotmac & MobileMe, iPhone, iPhone 3GS & iPhone 4, Macintosh Tips & Help | 1 Comment »

A lot of people are complaining about the fact their iPhone isn’t receiving anything from the MobileMe cloud; and I was one of them; but I finally managed and it is now up and working!
Here are the steps I followed to make my iPhone sync my data “over the air“:

  1. Sync the iPhone and uncheck the email sync (in iTunes)
  2. Open mail.app and deleted my .mac account
  3. Setup a “brand new” mobileme account
  4. Sync from system preferences the datas (contacts, ical etc)
  5. Sync the iPhone and check the MobileMe account (in iTunes)
  6. Went to the iPhone and set it up (pref>general>mail, contacts…) to sync these datas over the air
  7. (I saw) the contacts names appearing instead of their phone numbers in the recent/missed calls and on the SMS received and sent but still nothing in my address book
  8. Restart the iPhone: everything is there!

I still don’t know which of these steps made the “thing” work though…
