Posted on 25 April 2006 in Macintosh Tips & Help | 1 Comment »

To make Safari display back arabic text correctly (attached) you’ll need to disable two fonts from your FontBook.app, these fonts are installed by Microsoft Office 2004: Arial and Times New Roman.

Some OS X Security advices…

I’ve picked some ideas from Apple Discussions forum about OS X Security, and here is my strategy:

  1. no antivirus, no third parties firewalls (they can only cause problems)
  2. back up as often as i can
  3. enabling built in firewall (read this)
  4. + being protected by router’s firewall
  5. hiding preview pan in Mail.app
  6. disabling “open safe files” in Safari pref
  7. don’t open unknown sender’s attachements
  8. thanks Apple for the security update: they are WITH us (very good reactivity)
  9. create a Good Quality Administator password, it don’t have to be written anywhere in your Mac (in any file), you can write it down on a sheet of paper or on your mobile phone (be sure not to loose them :) ) (do never loose it!!!!!!)
  10. use another web browser like Firefox or Camino (which are Safer than Safari)
  11. PS: i really can’t use another browser, i love Safari too much…

Tiger’s Safari not so secure?

Posted on 27 February 2006 in Safari, Security & Maintenance | 2 Comments »

MacWorld UK has reported that a fully up-to-date system running Safari 2.0.3 (417.8) and Mac OS X 10.4.5 is vulnerable to a recently discovered security flaw. It can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user’s system. The source of this flaw is the way Mac OS X Tiger processes the meta data of the file associations of Zip archives. To make things worse this exploit allows Safari to automatically execute malicious code when visiting a website. One known way to avoid this vulberability is to disable the “Open safe files after downloading” option in Safari. If you want to test if your Mac is vulnerable Secunia is kind enough to provide a working demonstration.
