Change Safari progress bar in … 1 step

Posted on 26 June 2007 in Macintosh Tips & Help, Safari | No Comments »

You can change the Safari progress bar from the “classic” location bar filled from left to right to a pie chart progress indicator like this one:

Safari Custom Progress Bar

This trick only works on Safari 3 beta.

Open terminal in Applications>Utilities and type (or copy/paste):
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugUsePieProgressIndicator -bool true

If you want to revert to the old progress bar, go to terminal once again and type:
defaults delete com.apple.Safari DebugUsePieProgressIndicator

Here’s what you can do with Safari 3 beta’s tab:
* drag and drop them (to reorganize them)
* drag a single tab down to open it in a new window

A few updates…

Posted on 23 June 2007 in Safari, iPhone & iPhone 3G | No Comments »

The first Safari update is available from you “Software Update”, it’s version 3.0.2: recommended to all of Safari users.
Apple.com website has also been updated featuring an iPhone guided tour, which is mainly intended to prepare the “field” for iPhone’s launch (june 29th for the USA).
I also noticed that Apple.fr still hasn’t been restyled.

iPhone Guided Tour

You can watch the video at Apple.com or just download the full “Guided Tour” video (175 mb).

Apple also pushes forward iPhone’s internet capabilties with a YouTube player an there’s a noticeable new icon in one of the iPhone’s in Apple’s website.

“An error occurred while attempting to join the chat”

Posted on 19 June 2007 in 3rd Party Software, Macintosh Tips & Help, Safari, iChat | No Comments »

If you have this message (An error occurred while attempting to join the chat) don’t panic, it’s nothing but an incompatibility with Safari 3 beta.

Two ways to fix this bug:

Solution N°1- uninstall Safari beta

OR

Solution N°2- download Chax 1.4.9 beta 1; as a reminder, Chax is a plug in for iChat that adds several “missing features” to OS X’s default chat client.

Enable the Web Inspector in Safari beta 3

Posted on 15 June 2007 in Macintosh Tips & Help, Safari | No Comments »

A trick I found in Mac OS X hints, and the web inspector is superb (iPhoto style):

Safari Inspector

It’s a single line to copy (type) in the terminal after quitting Safari:

defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitDeveloperExtras -bool true

Restart Safari and you’ll find a new item “Inspect Element” in the contextual menu (that appears when you control + click somewhere on a page).

First thoughts on WWDC

I won’t repeat what you all have seen on Steve Jobs’s Keynote and what you’ve read on Apple.com but here are some of my views on Apple new stuffs…

  1.  iChat: I was really hoping and expecting for iChat to handle MSN and Yahoo! but it’s clear: iChat IS AIM, No MSN and/or Other IM support…iChat is AIM
  2. Safari for Windows: just like iTunes for Windows helped Apple to conquer some PC users for the iPod, Safari will probably be the bridge to iPhone
  3. Core Animation: the Leopard OS will really be beautiful, great special effects (stacks), amazing transparency effects (menu bar) and reflection (the new dock).Stacks

These are the 3 points that I wanted to add

Apple.com has been redesigned and I’m speecheless, the new look is superb! The new design is the “new brushed metal” (introduced with iTunes 7), the search function is now on the menu bar; no more “Mac OS X”, it has been replaced by “Mac in which you can browse Apple.Com by Mac, applications etc…

Browse Apple.Com

Apple also released Safari 3 beta for PC and Mac!

Safari 3 beta

Apple claims now that Safari is the fastest browser on ANY plateform!
