Dock Application Launchers

Posted on 6 July 2008 in 3rd Party Software, Macintosh Tips & Help | No Comments »

How many icons will you need on your dock for the Microsoft Office Suite? 5.
For iLife? 6 icons.
For iWork? 3 icons!
The aim of these Dock applications launchers is to reduce clutters in your dock.
Each of them is less than 100 kb and they use 0% of your CPU active or idle.
Intuitive to use: right click on them and you’ll see the entire series Applications:

ARD Patcher a fix to the ARDAgent Exploit in Tiger and Leopard

Posted on 5 July 2008 in Security & Maintenance | No Comments »

ARD Patcher is a free utility that patches the infamous ARDAgent exploit in Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5.
This is a fix to the exploit found a few days ago in Apple Remote Desktop.
It was an opportunity for Antivirus companies to push people installing their softwares in their Macintosh (business is business hehehe).
The software is also useful to test your Mac and see if it’s secure or not (as you can see in the screenshots below):

Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 is Fast!!

Posted on 29 June 2008 in 3rd Party Software | No Comments »

Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro on the Mac, one of the applications I use the most.
Still the same interface as Acrobat 8.
Very easy to handle with its big and easy to recognize buttons; the icon on the dock is a bit darker than the previous one.
Acrobat 9 is also bigger (more than 1 giga of HD space) than the previous version (800 mb approx).
The upgrade from version 8 is $159; it also comes bundled with the new released Adobe Creative Suite 3.3 (upgrade from CS3 is $159). But it loads much faster than the previous version, it’s very impressive indeed… I even thought I was launching the reader so much it was strange.
Anyway; the main new feature in Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro is the inclusion of Flash support, enhanced collaboration tools like PDF Portfolios, and improved print production tools.

How I managed with Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.1 problems?

Posted on 26 June 2008 in Humor, Macintosh Tips & Help, Microsoft | No Comments »

You’d answer: “download and install the update”? Too easy!!!
Here are the steps I followed to make it.

  • Step One: delete Office 2008!

I used AppZapper to download the suite and its preferences, then, I cleaned up the Application Support folder (in the Library folders) from the Microsoft folders.
I also deleted the Microsoft User Data folder in the Documents folder.

Beware of the Trojan!

Posted on 20 June 2008 in Security & Maintenance | No Comments »

Hidden behind a Poker Game, this Trojan has been discovered by Intego.
PokerStealer is its name, this Trojan comes in the shape of a Poker game; it contains a shell script that will asks you for your password pretending it will fix a preferences file in your system.
Once started, PokerStealer will activate SSH on your Mac and will send to a distant server your IP address, your ID and your password.
Then, a Pirate will use these datas to connect to your Mac: erase files, control your computer and do whatever he wants to do!
