2 Complaints about Safari vs. Firefox and their Fixes!

Posted on 23 June 2008 in 3rd Party Software, Macintosh Tips & Help, Made with iWeb, Mods and Hacks | No Comments »

  • First gap: PDF’s. While you’re able to read/download PDF files on the flow from Safari, Firefox 3 doesn’t have this ability. You can make Firefox open these kind of files by adding a free plugin that “uses PDFKit to display PDFs in the browser.â€
You can get the plugin here.
  • Second gap: iWeb made sites rendering is broken in Firefox 3. Until Apple releases a fix for iWeb, here’s a fix to download. Go here to download Fix iWeb and Firefox 3 1.1.

First Hands on Firefox 3 (vs. Safari)

Posted on 17 June 2008 in 3rd Party Software, Freeware, Safari | No Comments »

Last part of the detailed analysis of Firefox 3.
As I’m typing this post, I’m using Safari 4 developer preview, this post isn’t 100% neutral because my favorite browser ever is Safari….

If you take a look at the resources used by both browsers, you’ll notice Firefox 3 needs more CPU than Safari, which is not a good point for the latest version of Mozilla’s Firefox.
Popup Ad blocking is a feature that we don’t need to talk about anymore: it became a “normal” feature.
The new Google smart search bar isn’t better than Safari + the Inquisitor Add on (released more than a year ago).
As I said previously, Safari’s displays pages in a much better quality than Firefox 3.

Performances? I’m expecting to see very soon a benchmarking made by professionals to see which of the web browsers is faster, but honestly, when you have a very fast internet connection, it comes a point when you won’t feel any difference between two browsers.

The only good point for Firefox seems to be the ability for users to install Add ons (that will surely use more bandwidth and make the browser consume more system resources).
Safari 4 adds the ability to save pages as web applications, a feature that do not exist for the moment on Firefox 3.

My very own Conclusion: I’ll stick to Safari of course (expecting a lot from Safari 4); and I’ll wait for Camino 2.0 to install as a secondary browser.

Make the Movie Widget work on Tiger

Posted on 17 June 2008 in Dashboard, Mac OS X, Macintosh Tips & Help | 1 Comment »

Tiger users were able to use and download the widget from MacAmour.
But it seems it stopped working.
So here’s the how to fix it, then you’ll never get the “invalid zip code” error message again.
Recently the Leopard Movies widget, which Steve demoed along with Leopard, stopped working in Tiger. Leopard’s built-in Movies widget continues to function, while in Tiger, it gives an error of “invalid zip code.” You can make this widget function once again in 10.4.

Navigate to /Library/Widgets and find the Movies widget. Control-click on the widget and choose Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. Then open parser.js in your favorite text editor, and replace all occurrences of A99D3D1A-774C-4914-9E3B-18645117428A with DE7E251E-7758-40A4-98E0-87557E9F31F0 and save. Close any open movie widget in Dashboard, then re-open it. Now it works.

Apple Gives Developers Safari 4 Preview

Posted on 11 June 2008 in Safari | 2 Comments »

Apple has given developers a preview copy of Safari 4 via the Apple Developer Connection website.
Safari 4 Developer preview is available for Mac OS X Leopard, Tiger and Microsoft Windows.
I downloaded this “small” package of 26.8 MB and it’s the same application of course, same shape.
This preview is also available for Tiger and Windows.

Safari 4 adds the ability to Save a webpage as an application. Also spotted in the Safari preferences is the ability to specify whether new tabs or windows open with; home page, same page, empty page or bookmarks.
Here’s a screenshot of Safari 4:

PS: the small iPod button is an application, CosmoPod.
