Office for Mac 2011 is coming soon

Posted on 15 February 2010 in Microsoft | Comments

The new Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 which include the new Outlook for Mac—set to replace the Entourage e-mail client—.PST file support, and a number of collaboration tools.

There will also be some major compatibility improvements for users of both Mac and PCs. To the Mac Business Unit, compatibility means more than making sure that documents, spreadsheets, and presentations created on one platform open and render correctly on the other. Noting that roughly three quarters of their Mac users use Windows at least occasionally, Microsoft’s Mac team says it’s also working to make the new Office for the Mac more functionally compatible with the Windows edition.

The great news to me is, that finally, power users will be glad to see the return of the Visual Basic macro language. Visual Basic was dropped from Office 2008 in part because it was too technically difficult to port it to the Mac’s then-new Intel CPUs. Microsoft says it began work on that port as far back as 2008—before the last Mac Office shipped. That work is now complete. And the Mac suite will be using the most up-to-date version of Visual Basic, so it’ll be much more compatible with Office for Windows than the Visual Basic in previous versions of Office for Mac.

Office 2011 for Mac will arrive in time for the 2010 holiday season.

Lotus Notes is the leading client for messaging, e-business, and collaboration. In combination with the Domino Server, Notes is the most powerful client available, delivering unmatched functionality, security and ease of use. Organizations can reduce costs and gain a competitive edge by enhancing productivity and by leveraging the value of e-business and collaboration with Lotus Notes.

I’m very excited as the great fanatic I am of this product to announce the availability of Notes 8.5.1 for Mac.
Just follow this link to a copy.

According to IBM’s requirements, Notes 8.5 is for OS X 10.5.5 or higher and Intel only!

PS: IBM has never released a version 8.0 for OS X, as a result the most recent OS X version before the 8.5 is 7.0.3

NB: Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen announced that a mobile implementation of the full Flash Player 10 would be making its way onto several smartphones by October. In addition to Android, other mobile operating systems, including Windows Mobile, Palm’s WebOS, and Symbian have signed on. Missing from that list, to absolutely no one’s surprise, is the iPhone.

Lotus Notes & Mac BIG News

Posted on 7 October 2009 in 3rd Party Software | Comments

LOTS of big Lotus news today but the one that has my full attention is the release of 8.5.1 scheduled for October 12! This brings the much anticipated support for the iPhone. No, not “uber-ultra lite” – a real, integrated support of Lotus Notes email, calendar and contacts on the iPhone complete with all sorts of corporate security addressed.

One other really important announcement buried in the full announcement:

THE complaint of our users who have been using Lotus Traveler (on non-iPhone devices) has been the lack of a corporate address book. This statement suggests that the new release of Traveler addresses it for at least the iPhone (probably others as well).

Other BIG news included the announcement that Designer and Lotus Mobile Connect are now free (see your specific license details for exact details). Both are huge announcements as it further shows that Lotus Notes is a complete solution that addresses a wide variety of business needs – not just “that other” email platform.
