I just did another test this morning (sending my @me.com address an email) to see if it has been activated and YES it is active!
To me the transition to mobile can lead to 2 possible scenarios: on my opinion there will be another OS X update (Leopard & Tiger): thesis, but another scenario is possible too: antithesis.

THESIS:
These applications for example are making me think there will be an update to OS X:

  1. iChat:
  2. Apple Mail:
  3. Sync Panel from System Preferences:
  4. Keychain:

ANTITHESIS:
For now, the only rumor is a new version of iTunes 7.7, Leopard 10.5.5 or not?
Why the new service gives you an email with @me.com and not @mac.com? To reach PC users of course!
And why is iTunes too BIG? Because PC users don’t have iSync, because logically, it would be much better to have iSync managing your iPod/iPhone; they don’t use the QuickTime player which should be a video/movies manager; and they do have Safari for one purpose: iPhone.
I hope iTunes won’t be given ANOTHER task that will make too heavy to load!
A friend told me he won’t be surprised if Apple makes it manage your photos (like iPhoto) to make the Sync process easier for PC users!
