Every Mac user should know who she is!
Susan Kane is the graphic designer who created the original icons of the first Mac OS! From the finder’s to the trash! But she also designer all the Mac fonts but “Venice”.

Kare, who had grown up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, wanted to name her fonts after the railroad stations of the Paoli Local train: Ardmore, Merion, Rosemont, etc. Jobs liked the idea of using city names, but insisted on worldclass cities that corresponded to the original typefaces: New York (Times), Geneva (Helvetica), London (Old English), etc. The frivolous font known as San Francisco was originally named Ransom, because documents created with it looked like kidnappersā notes.
I wanted to write this post because it appears she is also the designer of the “gift” icons in Facebook, those virtual gifts ($1 for each) are offered everyday on FB, more than 20 millions have been exchanged to date.
You can visit her site by clicking here.

Thanks for highlighting Susan’s role! I once wrote to her after perusing her website, telling her that I appreciated her work, as a loyal Mac user since 1987. She very kindly wrote back with great sincerity. I’ve never met her, of course, but I almost feel as if I know her, at least in part, through her work!
Yeah I think I’d feel the same (if I ever have the luck to meet her). She played a great role in the look and esthetic of Mac OS.
