iWork ‘08: Bye Bye MS Office!

When I started the documents I’m working on (these days) on the 3 modules of iWork ‘08 (Pages, Keynote and Numbers) I was impressed on how fast these applications start, how powerful they are and how slick the design is.
I’m so happy Apple thought about those working in the Business field. While many people still think that Apple Computers are only made for designers, I’m proud to say that the Mac is also a Business Machine with great applications!
I used to hate those tables I’m working on because they look ugly and boring, but now, with Numbers watching them will become a real pleasure!
I’m a bit sad Apple didn’t bundle with these 3 applications, Microsoft Office’s documents’ icons.. Converting files to iWork format would be a huge work for people like me working on hundreds of Powerpoint, Excel and Word files.
Maybe someone will release an add-on for us (I hope).
To be honest I’m thinking of getting rid of Microsoft Office from my Mac, but I still want to be sure iWork handles everything: macros in particular.

I think it is goodbye MS Office indeed! Nice post.
I also regret that the MS Office documents (DOC, XLS & PPT) don’t have decent icons when associated with iWork… Does anyone know about a workaround for this?
Personally, I do not care that much about Microsoft Office for Mac. Anymore. I used to use it because that was pretty much the golden standard for almost everyone doing word processing, presentations and spreadsheets. I was very much impressed by keynote. When I exported it to PowerPoint format, a lot of the effects and transitions were gone and everything moved very, very fast. The timing went all wrong. I never much tried out Pages but since Numbers was introduced, I think I’ll give it a try. I checked the templates that they have for both applications and it is massive. The only reason I will keep Microsoft Office for Mac and the 2008 version when it comes out, will be to be backward compatible with everyone that uses Office at work. Other than that, there are 3 Macs in my family, me with the 17″ PowerBook and my sisters with the MacBook and MacBook Pro and my friends with MacBook Pros- I have a standard to maintain. The default will be iWork for me and I’ll export to other filetypes if need be. Microsoft Office will no longer be in my dock and iWork will be the default app boundle for handling their filetypes as well as Office .doc, .ppt and .xls file formats.

Very reasonable what you’re saying Kofi, very logical… It’s true, the new iWork rocks but leaving Office is risky for the moment.
