A52Codec has been updated a few days ago, so I take this as an opportunity to advise all QT users for the plugins they need to make almost all the formats work in their player. No need to install a single plugin more than this list (but for professionals who are working on other video formats).

First step: DELETE DivX Codec!

Delete all the plugins you added to your QT (but those I’ll list):

  1. Perian
  2. EyeTV MPEG Support
  3. XiphQT
  4. Flip4Mac
  5. QuickTime MPEG-2 Component 6.4.1
  6. A52Codec (not needed anymore since it’s bundled in Perian: read this post’s comments)

Here is how to install them:

  1. Double Click the Perian icon to install its preference pane and choose whether to install for all users or your user account only. Then click install Perian.
  2. Drag A52 codec into /Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components (ONLY the Audio Codec)
  3. Open Flip4Mac package to install. Flip4Mac installs for all users in /Library/Quicktime.
  4. Drag XiphQT to /Library/Components.
  5. Drag QuickTime MPEG2 to System/Library/Quicktime. This is where Apple’s package installs it. Dragging and dropping prevents a reboot.

NB: To install for only your user account, use your home Library directory instead (except for Apple’s QuickTime MPEG2 component)

That’s all!

Here are some technical infos on what you’ve just installed:

  • Perian: Perian enables QuickTime application support for the following Media Types:• AVI, FLV, and MKV file formats

    • AVI support for: AAC, AC3 Audio, H.264, MPEG4, and VBR MP3
Subtitle support for SSA and SRT

    • Includes subtitling support and Clear QAM support for certain models of EyeTV hardware and a more robust search and sort through recorded videos.
  • Flip4Mac: Flip4Macâ„¢ WMV is a collection of QuickTime components that allow you to play Windows Media video and audio files on your Mac using your favorite QuickTime-based applications.
    • Includes a Web Browser plug-in that plays Windows Media streams within Safari and other browsers.
  • XiphQT:
    • Allows QuickTime to play Xiph formats in any QuickTime-based application
    • Allows Ogg Vorbis to be played iTunes or producing Ogg Theora with QuickTime and iMovie.
    • FLAC is not supported yet.
  • Apple’s QT MPEG2:
    • Provides the ability to import and play back MPEG-2 content, including both multiplexed and non-multiplexed streams.
    • Will not play audio from vob or muxed MPEG2 files from encrypted DVDs.

Have fun watching any kind of movie with QT Player!
